Drumbo Road

flat grey gable of the Homestead
bottom of the Drumbo Road

old boulder built into the corner of it
echos solid trunks
grass bank wire and field

skip sprint keep eye out for cars
the camber the texture the tarmac
fine gravel along the edge of road

foot after foot
laboured pace or funny walk
swinging leather satchel from straps

there’s less traffic on the Drumbo Road

walking up between steep grass banks
gashed earth where some mad geezer
must’ve had to swerve

Gauguin in Brittany
painted hedgerows like that
tangle bramble tweedy textured clumps

and down there
Eddy Bell’s vegetable garden all laid out
I’ve painted some cottage pictures
always seen from certain angles
never entered

remember the side field flooded
that was great
skimming the ice on the ice

and now on this final flat bit
our buttercup yellow gate appears

foot after heel to toe foot
dawdling
